USAID, AUN distrubute teaching materials to 120,000 Gombe pupils
About 120, 000 primary school pupils in Gombe state are to benefit from teaching and learning materials from the American University of Nigeria (AUN) through funding of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Speaking at the flagging off yesterday in Gombe, the Chief of Party of the Strengthening Education in North East Nigeria (SENSE) project, Dr Audu Liman, said the progarmme was meant to improve literacy and increase the capacity of education administrators at the basic level.
Represented by Ibrahim Damare, he said the materials were given to the state Ministry of Education which will hand over to the Local Government Education Authorities (LEAs) for onward distribution to primary schools across the 11 LGAs of the state. In a remark, the SENSE projects team leader in the state, Isiyaku Babayo said 120,000 text books, 240 exercise books, 120, 000 school bags, 360, 000 sharpener, crayons and pencils as well as over 3000 teacher’s guides were presented for distribution to primary schools in the state.
He added that the beneficiaries of the items distributed are pupils at the lower basic education level from Primary 1 to 3.
A Permanent Member of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Malam Sani Sabo, said the materials would assist the teachers in the discharge of their duties and ease learning on the part of the pupils. He warned the schools management against diverting the materials and promised to ensure proper monitoring and utilization of the items.
