Hope for Girl Child Education as USAID-AUN Launches the SENSE Project

Girl child education received a boost in Adamawa State as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with American University of Nigeria (AUN) on July 22 formally launched the Strengthening Education in North-East Nigeria (SENSE) Project in Shelleng Local Government Area.

Adamawa State SENSE team leader, Stephen Medugu, explained that the project covers five Local Governments in Adamawa State and three in Gombe State and will ensure that educational authorities attain a higher capacity to plan, manage, oversee educational services as well as provide safe educational opportunities with a minimum package of instructional materials/supplies. It will also boost teachers' ability to deliver conflict-sensitive and quality basic education to children which will improve learning outcomes.

The Amna of Shelleng, HRH Abdullahi Isa Dasong II, who was the special guest of honor at the event, spoke through a representative. He thanked USAID and AUN for not only selecting six schools within their community but also for introducing the world standard model of learning. He was optimistic that "the future is bright for the Shelleng community as the leaders of tomorrow are been groomed well today."

Mr. Ahmad Muhammad, Acting Director, Social Mobilization Officer, Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), who was at the event stressed that Girl Child education could never be overemphasized.

Comrade Mohammed Baba Shelleng of Shelleng Local Government called on teachers in Shelleng to renew their commitment to their profession and meet up to their responsibilities.
